Dozens of taxi drivers attempted to enter Kgosi Mampuru prison on Wednesday to attend a court hearing there but were dispersed by law enforcement authorities. The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court has courtrooms that are located in the jail facility. The building is frequently called a jail court.
It is thought that the taxi drivers were in prison to attend the court case of someone who had allegedly murdered a taxi driver in Marabastad last month, according to Gauteng traffic spokeswoman Sello Maremane.
The M1, which runs alongside the prison, was first blocked by them.
Then, according to Maremane, a sizable group of taxi drivers allegedly tried to break into the prison.
To stop the drivers from accessing the facility, law enforcement personnel, including traffic cops from Gauteng and Tshwane Metro Police Department officers, worked with representatives from the correctional services department.
After that, they attempted to scatter the mob by firing rubber bullets. While the drivers departed, their taxis remained to obstruct the route. Maremane reported that around 30 cabs had been left behind.
The cabs were being towed away by Tshwane metro offices by 11:00, and the road was completely cleared by 13:00.
