GAROUA, Cameroon — In a significant medical breakthrough, the Neurosurgery Department at Garoua Regional Hospital (HRG) has successfully performed a total resection of a giant brain tumor. The high-precision surgery, which demanded exceptional expertise and seamless team coordination, marks a major step forward in delivering advanced specialized healthcare to underserved populations in northern Cameroon.
The complex operation was led by Dr. Ignatius Esene, a renowned Cameroonian neurosurgeon who heads the Neurosurgery Unit at HRG and serves as a Senior Lecturer in Neurosurgery at the University of Bamenda. Dr. Esene, holding qualifications including MD, MSc, PhD, and MPH, was recently honored with the 2025 Best Research Award at the World Congress of Neurosurgery in Dubai for his outstanding contributions to the field. He was assisted by Dr. Nathalie Ghomsi, a consultant neurosurgeon with expertise in global neurosurgery and neuro-oncology.

The procedure exemplifies the challenges and successes of performing intricate brain surgeries in resource-constrained settings, often described by Dr. Esene in his professional updates as “doing more with less.” Such giant tumors, when neglected, can present highly vascular and technically demanding characteristics, requiring hours of meticulous intraoperative work.
HRG credited the hospital’s Director, Dr. Balkissou Dodo Epse Nyako, for her unwavering commitment that enabled the intervention. The success aligns closely with the guidelines of Cameroon’s Ministry of Public Health (MINSANTÉ) and the vision of Universal Health Coverage (Couverture Santé Universelle, or CSU), which aims to make high-level specialized care more accessible to all citizens, regardless of location.
The hospital extended congratulations to the multidisciplinary teams involved, including the operating unit, surgical resuscitation, surgery department, and medical imaging services. Their professionalism underscores HRG’s high-performance technical platform and growing institutional expertise in neurosurgery.
This achievement reinforces Garoua Regional Hospital’s role as a pioneer in northern Cameroon, where Dr. Esene established the region’s first dedicated neurosurgical care unit. It demonstrates the institution’s capacity to handle advanced neuro-oncology cases locally, reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment and improving outcomes in the community.
As stated in the official announcement: “Through this success, HRG confirms its ability to deliver high-level specialist care to benefit our community. HRG: Excellence at the Service of Life.”
This case highlights ongoing progress in Cameroon’s healthcare system toward equitable access to specialized services, even in remote regions, and serves as an inspiring example of medical excellence driven by dedicated professionals.
